Music from water

Aim: Our Investigation is about “Can Water Make Music?” Elizabeth and I chose to work on this project because we saw on TV someone make music with water and we wanted to test this out and find out for ourselves if we could use water to make a simple musical instrument.

Question: Can we make music using different levels of water in glass tumblers? And which level of water would make better music?

Hypothesis: We think that we can make music with water. We predict that the smallest amount of water in the glass tumbler would make a sharp sound and a nice tone.

Experiment
Equipment: 4 drinking glass tumblers
Water in each tumbler at a different level
Wooden stick such as a pencil

Procedure:
1.Line up each glass next to each other and fill them with different amounts of water.
2.The first glass should have a high amount of water and the last should have a small amount of water. The ones in between should have a slightly more water than the last one.
3.Tap the glass tumbler with the least amount of water and observe the sound, then do the same for the other glass tumblers.
4.Now tap all glass tumblers and in any order to see if you could make up a tune by just tapping them in order.
5.Observe which glass tumbler makes better music.

Observation: When we tapped each one to see which glass tumbler had a lovely sound, it turned out to be the glass with the least amount of water in it. Our hypothesis was correct.

Conclusion:
From our experiment we learned that we can make music with water. It sounds quite good.

In India some musicians play this kind of musical instrument and make beautiful music with it. They call this musical instrument “Jal Tharang” (Water Music.

Invisible Shield!

Aim:To find out what happens to newspaper when it is in a container and is immersed in water.

Question:Would a sheet of newspaper placed in a container get wet when immersed in water?

Hypothesis:We think that the sheet of newspaper would get wet.

Experiment-Equipment:
• Sheet of newspaper
• Empty glass
• Bowl of water.

Procedure:
1. Crumple a sheet of newspaper and stuff it into an empty glass tightly.
2. Holding the glass bottom up, sink it deep into the bowl filled with water.
3. Hold it there for a minute or so.
4. Pull the glass out of the water and remove the paper.
5. Check to see if the paper got wet or remained dry.

Observation:We saw that the paper did not get wet but remained dry.

Conclusion:Water cannot get into the glass to make the paper wet because the empty glass is already filled with air, and the air cannot get out because it is lighter than water.
From this experiment we learned that newspaper in a glass tumbler gets an invisible shield and does not get wet in water.

Next Steps:To learn about the application of this investigation to other daily life situations.


Magic, Illusion or Trickery

Aim:To understand why we see red and blue when the only colours on the disc are black and white.

Question:Why do we see red and blue when the only colours on our disc are black and white?

Hypothesis:We think that when we spin the disk, the patterns on it might still look black and white.

Experiment - Equipment
• White paper
• Scissors
• Black vivid
• Cardboard
• Straight pin
• Pencil with an eraser.

Procedure:
1) Cut a circle four inches (10 cm) in diameter out of white paper.
2) Colour one half black.
3) Divide the white half into four equal parts.
4) In each segment draw three black arcs about ¾ inches (19 mm) thick.
5) Cut a circle four inches (10 cm) in diameter out of the cardboard.
6) Place the paper circle on the cardboard circle.
7) Mount them together on a pin, attach to a pencil with an eraser.
8) Revolve the disk at various speeds, clockwise and anti clockwise.

Observation:The arcs seem to close up to form 6 rings. At a slow speed, spinning clockwise, the outer rings look blue and the inner rings look red. When we spun them anti-clockwise, the colours reversed.

Conclusion:Our hypothesis was incorrect. We could see the arcs in red and blue.
The arcs seem to close to form rings, because the eye continues to see each arc for a short time after it has disappeared.

What actually happens is that we see red and blue when the only colours on the disc are black and white. The entire colour spectrum is present in white light, but our eyes register the different lengths of time.
When we spin the disk, light from the colours that make up white reach the eye, but are visible for only an instant before being followed by the black portions of the disk. Our eye is only able register a part of that colour spectrum-the blue, which has the shortest rays, and the red, which has the longest rays.


Bending Water

Aim:To find out if we can bend water, and if so how?

Question:How do you possibly bend water? Can you do it?

Hypothesis: We don’t think we can bend water.

Experiment - Equipment
If you are going to bend water you will need...
• A nylon comb
• A stream of water out of the tap
• Dry hair

Procedure:
1. Turn on the water so it is falling from the tap in a narrow stream (just a few millimetres across but not droplets.)
2. Run the comb through your hair just as you normally would when brushing it. (do this several times)
3. Move the comb closer to the stream of water from the tap
4. Slowly bring the teeth of the comb near the stream of water, about 3 or 4 inches below the faucet.
5. When the teeth of the comb are about an inch or less away from the stream, the stream will bend towards the comb.

Observation: After running the nylon comb through our hair, the hairs on our head stood on end.
When the teeth of the comb were placed about an inch or less away from the stream of water, the stream of water bent towards the comb.

Conclusion: When you comb your hair with a nylon comb, both the comb and your hair become charged. The comb and your hair acquire opposite charges. Because the individual hairs acquire the same charge, they repel each other. This is static electricity.

The comb attracts the stream of water in the same way. The charge on the comb attracts the molecules of water in the stream. Because the molecules in the stream can be moved easily, the stream bends toward the comb.

Next Steps: Next time we do the experiment we will use other variables and check what happens.

Variables we will use are as follows:

• How the distance between the stream and the comb affect how much the stream bends.
• Run the comb through our hair several more times and see if the comb bends the stream of water more.
• Change the size of the stream by adjusting the tap.
• Use other combs and try these to see if some bend the stream more than others.

We enjoyed doing this Science Investigation.

Eastern Zone Netball Tournament

On Thursday 18th August 2011, Tamaki Intermediate’s boys and girls went to Morrin Road to play Netball. For the girls we had to wear short skirts and dark blue T- shirts with our school logo on it. We played against five schools who were to participate in the game.

First we had to make sure that we put on our sports shoes. We had to then do some warm ups and make sure that we were prepared for our first game against St. Heliers. Our first game started at 9:55 a.m. on a very cold day.

When the alarm went on to say that we had to start our game, we were fully prepared and had a lot of energy. Our games took about half an hour and our break for half time was just for 5 minutes. We won against St. Heliers 6 goals to 1. We were all jumping up and down with excitement.

Our next game was against Stanhope who had some good players, and we won our 2nd game. Our coach Miss. Valoa was a really good coach, because Stanhope’s players were really tall and huge. Miss Valoa told us that they had the height but we had the speed and we weren’t nervous any more.

Next up we had to play against Churchill Park School. They were little but had very good communication amongst themselves. We won this game we were going to play in the semi-finals.

To prepare ourselves for the semi-finals some of us were playing in half court and practiced our our steps, passing skills, pivot skills and shooting skills. We played against Glendowie and won the match.

Then we had to played the final match against Baradene. We lost to Baradene. As we walked off the court our heads were still held high as we were proud of ourselves.
At the end of this busy day, we had to go to sit down on court 4 for the prize giving. The Year 7 girls were placed 2nd. We were tired and exhausted from the games that we participated in. Even though we lost one game we were proud that we represented our school well and earned the 2nd placing.

A Fun-filled and Exciting Term 2

Term 2 was a fun-filled and fantastic term. It was a term in which we did a lot of learning.
The subject that I enjoyed learning about most was maths, because we did fun activities and learned a lot more about Measurement, Algebra and Number. We learned multiplication, long division, addition, percentages, fractions and much more. My group Kakariki made loopy people with Miss. B. a student teacher who worked in our classroom. Maths this term was really fun and exciting.
In topic study we were learning about “Unity and Diversity”. It was about how we are different but we are all the same despite our differences. To start with the year 7s had a fashion show. Each person had to dress up in his/her own cultural costumes to represent their culture. We loved the catwalk and proudly walked to the stage as different people but we stood there as one united group. During the term we learned about tolerating all races and being kind to different people who live here in New Zealand. We learned that we should live in peace and harmony even though we are all different.
Out on our fields most students practiced every lunch break and at P.E. for various sports tournaments we participated in. We had some very good results in the Eastern Zone and Inter Zone championships in Rugby and Soccer.
Later on in the term, we went to the careers expo at the ASB show grounds at Green Lane. We learned about a lot of careers we could take up later in our lives. At school we researched for information about careers that we wanted to take up. We processed our information and then prepared our displays for our very own school Careers Expo. This was a fantastic experience.
Learning about Matariki with Mrs. Bailey was always fun. Performing our class action song with long sticks was a proud moment for Room 12. This term was an extremely busy term in which a lot of learning went on.
We are all looking forward to a good break after 11 long weeks of Term 2.

School is Cool - Rap

I am walking in the hall way and the walls are blue,
There not a lot of people there are only a few.
I’m running a little late ‘cause it’s 8:59
Jus going to grab a pencil and I’ll jus be fine,
I’m jus going to rap about all my classes, it would be nice if you made no passes.

I’m taking you to school on a normal day
Interval and Lunch are my time to play
Some people study and some do not
2+2=4 just in case you forgot.

First period is English and parts of speech,
Mrs Raj is in the class that is what she’s going to teach,
When it comes to punctuation I’m the best thing ever.
Poems are my favourite because I know how to rhyme.
OH look the bell rang I’m out of time.

Going Away

On Friday the 17th June I’m leaving Tamaki Intermediate and going to Bader Intermediate School in Mangere. The reason why I’m leaving this school is because I don’t see my parents who live in Mangere a lot. I only see them in the weekends. During school weeks I stay here in Glen Innes with my nana. She’s 75 years old and she has a few kids to look after. So I am now moving in with my parents.

I’ll miss this school a lot. I hope it stays open no matter what happens. I’ll miss my friends, my teachers {Mrs Raj and Miss Waetford}, the fantastic house sports, games and also the tiring 1km run.

This is the best school I’ve ever been to and I will treasure all the best memories of the fun things I’ve ever done here.

Unity in Diversity - My Speech about Malaysia

Ni Hao everybody, Did you know I can speak Cantonese, English and Chinese? Well you might think I am Chinese but I am a Malaysian and I would love for you to learn a little about my beautiful country Malaysia.

Malaysia has a very diverse group of people. The people follow different religions like Islam, Buddhism and Christianity. Along with that we have people speaking many languages like the Malaysian or Malay language, English and many Chinese dialects. People in Malaysia are from different backgrounds speaking different languages and following different religions yet they all live together in harmony.

Kuala Lumpur is the capital and the largest city in Malaysia. It has a population of 1.4 million people – which is lots of people! Kuala Lumpur has hosted many sporting, political and cultural events. They have hosted such events as the 1998 Commonwealth games and the Formula One World Championship. Kuala Lumpur is also home to the TALLEST twin buildings in the world, they are called the Petronas Twin Towers and they are a popular symbol in Malaysia.

Malaysia is a beautiful place to visit. I hope you can go there yourself one day. We have very beautiful beaches and enchanting islands. From easily accessible golden sands to crystal clear waters, it is as close to heaven on earth as one can possibly get.

When you get to visit Malaysia, you will have to use the Malaysian Ringgit and you will find that we use one dollar notes, unlike New Zealand where we use one dollar coins.

We also have an amazing variety of food for you to try. Malaysian cuisine reflects the multicultural aspects of Malaysia. Various ethnic groups in Malaysia have their own dishes, but many dishes in Malaysia come from multiple ethnic influences. Food preparation differs from place to place, even though they are all cooking the same food. Different preparations have different taste and decoration, but generally the ingredients used are the same.

A popular dish based on rice is Nasi Lemak, rice steamed with coconut milk to lend it special fragrance, and served with fried anchovies, peanuts, sliced cucumber, hard boiled eggs, and a spicy chili paste known as sambal.

As you can see there are many different cultures and religions living together in in Malaysia. I hope you have learned about all the interesting things about Malaysia, and about the many things to try and do – I hope all the students and teachers here are able to go to Malaysia someday.

The Happy Samoans - My Speech

Do you know who the happiest people are? I do! They are Samoans from Samoa. Today I want to talk to you about the happy Samoan people and their rich culture.

Samoans are known as the "happy people" because of their enjoyment of life and their good-spirited nature.

Samoan and English are the spoken languages in Samoa. The Samoan language is very similar to Hawaiian, Tongan, Tahitian and Maori languages with many words having similar meanings.

Savaii is the largest island in Samoa, and Apia is the capital which is located on the island of Upolu. Both islands are covered in forests and are surrounded by coral reefs. Samoa is a naturally beautiful place. American Samoa, is the neighbour of Samoa and shares the same culture and history.

Dance and music are an important part of the Samoan culture. If you visit any of the villages you will be able to watch the “fiafia” which is a dance done by the people. You can also watch a “siva” which is a local dance and is popular in Samoa.

Another interesting part of the Samoan culture is the tattoos. Samoans regard tattoos as very important and most Samoans have some type of Tattoo. Most of the tattoos have a religious meaning.

Samoans also really like to cook and drink their traditional foods. The food is cooked in an “umu” which is an oven in the ground. “Kava” or “Ava” is a drink made from the pepper plants and the roots are used to make the drink.

Family is very important in the Samoan culture, in the New Year Samoans decorate their homes with flowers and coloured paper and give each other gifts.

The Samoan culture is diverse and also unites the people they share it with.

Ma’ulu’ulu dance - My Speech

Kia ora,Talofa, Malolelei and greetings to you all.
Who knows what the Ma’ulu’ulu dance is?

I am going to talk to you all about the Ma’ulu’ulu dance in Tonga which unites all people through their dance and music.

The Ma’ulu’ulu is a traditional Tongan dance, performed by a group of seated men and women. The dance form is from the ancient Tonga ‘Otuhaka having been put together with the Samoan Ma’ulu’ulu dance form.

The performers of the dance sit down in a row on the ground, cross legged, usually the right leg over the left. If possible men and women alternate. To the left/or right /are the nafa, Nafa is the drums. But the Tanafa are the ones who do the drumming. Behind them stand the langituʻa, the singers. On formal occasions, like a presentation to the king, the dance master also stands in the back.

If there are many dancers,at a really huge occasion, they sit in rows spread out. The dancers of the front row sit on the ground. The second row on a low bench, the next row on a higher bench, And so forth. The last row usually stands, or if that is still not enough, they may stand on benches and tables. If the dance is an effort of a local community, young and old perform. The youngest children then cutely sit at the ends of the rows.

So in Tonga people come together to sing and dance. They are all united in this art form of music and dance. Different people in Tonga may dance and sing slightly differently yet they are all united despite their diversity. Well this is one example of “Unity in Diversity”

Dance away and live in peace and harmony is what I say to all people.

Kia ora everyone.

Raise your hands if you are a proud New Zealander.

We are proud of our country and its peoples. New Zealand is the most peaceful country in the world today. Do you wonder why? Well, let me tell you why.

Aotearoa New Zealand is a beautiful South Pacific country. Most parts of the country enjoy lots of sunshine and rainfall and the weather is always changing but not the people and the cultures.

As we know, New Zealand culture now has many other cultures mainly from the Pacific Islands, East Asia and South Asia. European and Māori remain the two largest cultures, but the Polynesian culture is also very large with many Polynesian people calling New Zealand home.

The culture of New Zealand is unique because of the Maori, the English, the European, the Asian and the Polynesian cultures, customs and traditions.

The Māori culture is a big part of New Zealand’s history. Once the Maori people settled in NZ, they established separate tribes, built villages (Pā), hunted, fished, traded, developed agriculture, arts and weaponry.

The English people introduced the Maori to many new things like religion, technology, and the English language. In 1840 Māori leaders signed the Treaty of Waitangi, to enable the tribes to live peacefully with the English people. Inspite of some problems, the Māori culture has regained much of its lost language and culture. In the late 20th century the Treaty of Waitangi became part of the school curriculum and this helped to promote understanding, peace and harmony between Māori, Pākehā and the other people who live in NZ.

New Zealand has two special days, Waitangi Day and ANZAC Day, and it also celebrates holidays and other cultural festivals and celebrations. The national anthem, "God Defend New Zealand” is often sung with both Māori and English verses. Many citizens prefer to just call themselves New Zealanders or Kiwis. This shows that we are united as a nation of different peoples. We do have unity in diversity.

We are very lucky that New Zealand has unique and different cultures. We have our Maori culture but we also get to learn about other cultures of people that live here too. Having different cultures in New Zealand helps us understand each other and helps us live as one people, all different but all united. This is Unity in Diversity.

United through Dance and Music - My Speech

We the students at Tamaki Intermediate are from different Countries, different cultures and we speak different languages. Yet we are all united in this diversity.

Even though we are different peoples we live together in NZ in peace and harmony.
What brings us together? Learning together, eating together and singing and dancing together makes us have unity in diversity.

Today I would like to tell you something about the Cook Islands Song and Dance which is very much at the heart of the culture of the Cook Islands. The dances of the Cook Islands are renowned throughout Polynesia for their expression and sensuality.

The gifts of music, song and dance play a large part in the culture of the Cook Islands and native children begin to dance as soon as they can walk. Each of the 15 islands that make up the Cook Islands has its own special dances. Each island has a slightly different dancing technique which makes their performances unique. Even through all this the people of the Cook Islands are united through dance and song.

In general, the women dance with a swaying hip movement that slowly goes from side to side. They dance with flat feet which is hard to do while swaying the hips - and the shoulders should be kept absolutely still. In fact, girls and young women are judged on how still they keep their shoulders while dancing - the stiller they are, the better dancers they are considered to be.

The men meanwhile dance with slightly bent knees, which they knock together in time with the drum beat. They also have a grinding movement and overall, their dance is very jerky when compared to the smooth swaying of the hips of the women. The two dances are completely opposite but when they are performed together they produce a dance which is simply described as spellbinding.

Despite not being as well known as the Hawaiian hula and the Tahitian Tamure. The dancers wear traditional costumes, comprising skirts, which are worn by both men and women, made from cotton material or bark cloth covered with grass, long green leaves and dried bark strips. These are often adorned with shells, seeds, bright leaves and colourful flowers.

The headdresses are made from bright flowers and are very ornamental. They are easily the most prominent part of the costume, and the men regularly have feathers attached for added height. The costumes can take months to make, however once made they can last for years.

Cook Island dancing is always accompanied by music and, on most occasions, there are singers as well. The singers tell traditional tales in the native language, while the drummers and other musicians accompany them with a rhythmic beating of their drums.

The Cook Islanders are united through their music and dance like people in other cultures are.

My Speech about Moko

Would you ever get a Moko? If you have ever thought of getting one, maybe you should know some information first. Let me tell you what I know.

The Moko is like an identity card, or passport. In the old days, for men, the Moko showed their rank or their status, having the Moko meant that the wearer had power and could be recognized. It would be a great insult if the person was not recognized as the chief he was, and this could lead to "utu" or revenge.

My nan has a Moko, it is a small one on her chin. If you have a Moko on your face or chin, you are not allowed to smoke or drink, I think that this is good.

Mokos are made by using a range of tools like a chisel made out of bone and the ink is made from burnt timbers. Mokos used to be very painful to get this way, but now we have electric tattoo guns that do not hurt so much.

Mokos are tattoos and many cultures have traditional tattoos. Samoans, Tongans, Fijians, Niueans, Cook Islanders and Hawaiians have tattoos. Tattoos represents many stories and traditions of each and every culture.

Even though the Moko is a Maori tattoo, many cultures all over the world use Tattoos for different reasons.

We are all different cultures but we are all together and united. Mokos are symbols that could bring people of the same cultures together.

The Indian Festival Raksha Bandhan - My Speech

You have heard about Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, But have your heard about Brothers’ and Sisters’ Day?
Well, in India Brothers’ and Sisters’ Day is celebrated in the month of August, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated at full moon in August. For this special day Indian sisters make delicious sweets.
On the day itself, they give the sweets to their brothers and tie colourful bracelets called rakhis around their brothers’ right wrists. The rakhis are meant to make sure that the brothers will be healthy, happy, rich, and successful. In return, the brothers often give presents to their sisters and promise to protect them from danger.
Rakhis are made from colourful cotton or silk threads and are decorated with artificial flowers, shiny beads or tiny pompoms. Each rakhi is different. Some are simple and others are very fancy.
The sisters prepare an Indian sweet called barfi for their brothers the day before the festival.
First they make syrup with sugar and water. Then they add milk powder to the syrup and stir the mixture. Then, melted butter is added and the mixture is cooked for a while. When everything has been stirred together, the mixture is poured into a tray. In the morning the barfi is cut into diamond shapes.
On the day, the barfi, rakhis, and red powder are placed on a tray. Each sister blesses her brother by placing a small red dot in the centre of his forehead. The rakhi is tied to the brother’s right wrist. A slice of barfi is offered to the brother. The sister greets the brother saying “Happy Raksha Bandhan”. The brother then offers a gift to his sister.
In India it is a National holiday and all brothers and sisters unite and celebrate this happy day.
All cultures have special days of celebration, even though they may be different, they are similar in many ways. We can all be united through celebrating with each other. Unity in Diversity I guess!

I am Melvin from Room 12. I am writing this letter to say my aunty Repecca is the best aunty in the world because she always buys me treats and whatever I ask for. If I wake up late and cannot make my sandwiches for lunch in the morning, she is always there to make them for me and my cousins. The most important thing is that she loves me very much and she takes care of me. She deserves to win the Mother’s Day prize.

A Different and Challenging Term 1 at Tamaki Intermediate!


What a busy yet lovely term I had at Tamaki Intermediate!                  
First memory and reflection I am going to write about is our swimming carnival we had last month. We had two groups called “Sharkies” and “Nemos.”  I was in Sharkies. Our house Leaders and Captains asked us whether we would freestyle or backstroke. I decided to choose backstroke. When the groups finished deciding, the year 7’s had to go in front of the pool.  First it was freestyle then backstroke. I came 2nd in the first race and in the next race I came 1st.  I was very happy and proud of myself. We had a great time.
For the year 7 girl’s softball tournament, we went in a white van with Mrs. Takarei. Shamine, Aluat, and I went to play 5 schools. I was a sub. We won 3 games and lost 2. We had a big smile on our faces when we came back to school. The next morning we heard great news we came 2nd in the whole of Auckland! That was the best I have ever played!
Learning at Tamaki Intermediate is very good. I love learning to read and write, I love solving maths problems. I enjoyed term 1 and am looking forward to Term 2.

On the 10th of March 2011, the Year 7 students of Tamaki Intermediate visited the Museum of Transport and Technology. A wonderful lady called Elaine showed us around and answered our questions. We went because it was to help us with our learning about ‘Kiwiana’ of our Amazing Aotearoa. After she answered our questions my class got spit up into 2 groups. I went with my cool teacher Mrs Andrews. My group saw lots of these old fashioned clothes and transport. As we looked around and walked past the different things about our beautiful country, we saw lots of signs that said DO NOT TOUCH.
We had a wonderful time learning about New Zealand. Term 1 was busy yet excellent because we learned a lot in this short time.
